Cancer List: Top 10 Common Types Of Cancer in Nigeria

After reading my previous post on cancer, someone who was inspired by the post emailed and asked me to shed more light on other types of cancers; in response to this request,  i have carefully selected the common cancer list & types in Nigeria.

Here are the common cancer list & types in Nigeria:

Prostate Cancer

Prevalence: among the most common cancer types in Nigeria, prostate cancer is the most common with about 100,000 new cases in men.

Area Mostly Affected: Man’s prostate

Risk Factors: family history, unhealthy diet / lifestyle & genetics.Symptoms: Excessive urination especially at night, burning sensation while urinating & presence of blood in urine.

Treatment: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy & hormone therapy.Complications: Spread to other parts of the body, urinary dysfunction & life threatening.

Leukemia

Prevalence: less than 100, 000 new cases annually in Nigeria.

Area Mostly Affected: bone marrow

Risk Factors: smoking, hereditary, exposure to carcinogens & prior chemotherapy.

Symptoms: fatigue/weakness, swollen lymph nodes, pain in the bone, anemia & excessive bleeding.Treatment: Radiation therapy, bone marrow transplant & chemotherapy.

Complications: bone marrow damage, kidney problem, it can lead to other cancers (lung, throat stomach & bladder) and life threatening.

Lung Cancer

Prevalence: about 100,000 new cases annually in Nigeria.

Area Mostly Affected: Lungs

Risk Factors: smoking, genetics, exposure to asbestos & air pollution.

Symptoms: weight loss, difficulty with breathing, painful cough with blood & fatigue.

Treatment: Surgery, chemotherapy &radiotherapy.

Complications: Damage to the lungs & life threatening.


Colorectal Cancer (also bowel/colon cancer)

Prevalence: about 100,000 new cases annually in Nigeria.

Area Mostly Affected: colon / rectum

Risk Factors: obesity, smoking & unhealthy diet / lifestyle.

Symptoms: weight loss, general body weakness, presence of blood in the stool, loss of appetite, nausea/vomiting, anemia & constipation.

Treatment: surgery, radiotherapy & chemotherapy.

Complications: it can spread to other body parts & life threatening.

Bladder Cancer

Prevalence: less than 100,000 new cases annually in Nigeria.

Area Mostly Affected: urinary bladder

Risk Factors: smoking, hereditary & bladder infections.

Symptoms: blood in urine, burning sensation while urinating & excessive urination.

Treatment: radiotherapy, immunotherapy & chemotherapy

Complications: bladder damage & life threatening.

Skin Cancer

Risk Factors: light skin color, environmental pollution, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, smoking & HPV.

Symptoms: discoloration of the skin, presence of sores on the skin, itching & bleeding on the affected parts.

Treatment: surgery, radiotherapy & chemotherapy.

Complications: it can spread to other body parts & life threatening.

Kidney Cancer (also renal cancer)

Prevalence: less than 100,000 new cases annually in Nigeria.

Area Mostly Affected: kidney

Risk Factors: smoking, some medications, obesity, genetic disorder, unhealthy diet/lifestyle, hereditary & infections.

Symptoms: painful urination, fever, abdominal pain & blood in urine.

Treatment: surgery

Complications: widespread to other parts, kidney failure & life threatening.

Pancreatic Cancer

Prevalence: less than 100,000 new cases annually in Nigeria

Area Mostly Affected: pancreas

Risk Factors: smoking, obesity, diabetes, heredity & unhealthy diet.Symptoms: Constipation, loss of weight, low appetite, pain in the back or abdomen & jaundice.

Treatment: surgery, chemotherapy & radiotherapy.

Complications: it can spread to other body parts & life threatening.

Non- Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL)

Prevalence: less than 100,000 new cases annually in Nigeria.

Area Mostly Affected: blood

Risk Factors: hepatitis C, obesity, smoking, family history, age, certain chemicals/drugs, radiation, weak immune system & autoimmune diseases.

Symptoms: pain in the bone/chest, general body weakness, swollen lymph nodes & loss of weight.

Treatment: chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immune targeted therapy & surgery.

Complications: it can spread to other body parts & life threatening.

Liver Cancer (also hepatic cancer)

Area Mostly Affected: liver

Risk Factors: hepatitis B, excessive alcohol, cirrhosis, diabetes, heredity, obesity, smoking & unhealthy diets.

Symptoms: loss of weight, low appetite, general body weakness, nausea & vomiting.

Treatment: surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy & tumor ablation.

Complication: liver damage and Life threatening.

Other notable mention: GYNECOLOGICAL CANCER
